Prof Nadkarni is a profound scholar and has written an erudite introduction about Lingayatism/Veerashaivism and Basavanna’s place in it.Lingayat Darshan and Vacanas are Karnataka’s greatest contribution to Indian hought and literature.
This book presents a translation both into Sanskrit and English verse, of 320 selected Vacanas of the Devotees of siva of 11th and 12th Century Karnataka, known as siva-saranas. The original Vacanas selected for translation are also presented in Roman script with diacritical marks for the benefit of those who know spoken Kannada but not its script, which can enable the readers to appreciate their poetic beauty and charming alliteration and rhythm. The book is thus trilingual.
